There’s More to the Alabama Gulf Coast Than Just the Beach

As much as I love the white sand and the beautiful water at the Alabama Gulf Coast, I can’t spend all my time on the beach. Fortunately, when I have had my limit for the day and have to leave my umbrella-topped chair, there is plenty to do— and not just shopping, although there is plenty of that.

Love history? Well, how about Fort Morgan, a fort that played a major role in the Civil War?

Or how about riding the Fort Morgan Ferry across the Mobile Bay to Dauphin Island? It’s just a short ride, and while you’re there you can visit Fort Morgan’s twin, Fort Gaines.

Just a few steps away from Fort Gaines, you can visit the Estuarium, which chronicles the natural history of the island.

Not a history buff? Prefer something more active? There are several places where you can play carpet golf, drive little cars around a track, or play on water slides. Take the kids along—they’ll enjoy it, too.

OK, if you don’t like history and prefer not to risk life and limb, how about the little zoo that became famous for its struggle to survive after Ivan?

Of course, there is fishing. We’re working on a separate section on that. Keep checking.

We’re also gathering information for a golf section, too—there’s lots of great golf along the Gulf Coast.

And nature—from several stops along the Alabama Birding Trail to a wildlife refuge along the bay to the success story of the brown pelican, you can get close to nature here at the Gulf.

. . . and, as always, there is more. We’re busy gathering information, taking pictures, and writing up information to share with you. When we’re not stretched out on the beach under that umbrella, that is.
